Operators Announce Commercial Availability of oneM2M Platforms

According to Kang Jong-oh, general manager at the platform development division of LG U+, the company added the oneM2M global standard to their existing IoT service infrastructure so as to target the international market.

Kang said the company will support small- and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups in the IoT business.

According to SK Telecom, the development of the oneM2M-based open-source platform, Mobius, began in 2011 as a national project, together with the Korea Electronics Technology Institute and nTels. As oneM2M announced a candidate release for an IoT/M2M standard in August of this year, SK Telecom implemented the standard within the Mobius platform, finishing the development of a commercialization-ready platform.

SK Telecom plan to finalise the national project in the first quarter of 2015 and to open a platform on its commercial network later in the year.

"The announcements of these oneM2M-based platforms being made available commercially are the first such public statements and are proof of how important oneM2M is to operators as part of an IoT platform," commented Richard Brennan, chairman of oneM2M's marketing group.

The LG U+ platform is being shown at the oneM2M showcase event this week in a demonstration together with LG Electronics, Modacom and Eluon.

The Mobius platform is being demonstrated by SK Telecom together with Convida Wireless, Fraunhofer, KETI, NEC Corporation and nTels.
