Standards for M2M and the Internet of Things

Dr. Omar Elloumi, Alcatel Lucent, elected as chair of oneM2M Technical Plenary

Busan, Republic of Korea, 24 November 2014 - Meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea on 10-14 November 2014, the oneM2M Technical Plenary elected Dr. Omar Elloumi of Alcatel Lucent as its new chair. This 14th Technical Plenary meeting was hosted by the Telecoms and Technology Association (TTA) of Korea.

Three vice-chairs were elected to assist Dr. Ellloumi: Mr. Nick Yamasaki of KDDI, Mr. Ki Young Kim of LG Electronics and Mr. Roland Hechwartner of Deutsche Telekom AG.

oneM2M is the global Initiative developing standards for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications enabling large-scale implementation of the Internet-of-Things (IoT). With over 200 member organizations involved, the project delivered its first set of nine Candidate Release specifications in August 2014.

In this 14th Technical Plenary meeting, oneM2M confirmed that the full first release of specifications will be published by the end of January 2015. This follows a period of public review of the Candidate Release and consolidation of the comments received.

Also at this meeting, oneM2M has commenced work on the second release of its specifications, and has established a new working group to develop test and interoperability specifications. Lack of interoperability of M2M services and devices would slow roll-out and hinder market development, and addressing interoperability issues as early as possible is significantly more efficient and cheaper than doing so after products are launched. oneM2M recognizes that the availability of common test specifications and the organization of interoperability testing events will assist manufacturers and service providers to provide interoperable products and solutions.
